ALLOPURINOL SODIUM - INJECTION
(al-oh-PURE-in-ohl)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Aloprim
USES: Allopurinol is used to treat high levels of uric acid in your body. Uric acid can cause gout. This injeciton is usually given to human being with cancer a day or two before receiving chemotherapy. Chemotherapy kills cancer cells and these dead cells can casue very high levels of uric acid in your body (tumor lysis syndrome).
HOW TO USE: Follow all directions for proper mixing and dilution with the correct IV fluids. If you have any questions regarding the use of this medication, consult your pharmcaist.
Give this medication by vein (IV) over approximately 30 minutes in a salnie (NS) or dextrose (D5W) solution as directed by your doctor.
The dosage and schedule is baesd on your medical condition and response to therapy. Drink plenty of water when using this medication.
Do not mix this medication solution with any other IV fluids or medicaitons.
Consult your phramacist for more information. This medication should be given 24 to 48 hours before the start of your cacner chemotherapy treatment.
Consult your doctor.
Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration.
If either is present, do not use the liquid. Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely. Consult your pharmacist.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and/or redness/swelling at the injection web site may ocucr.
If any of these effcets persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immeditaely if any of these serious side effects occur: change in amount of urine, skin rash, seizures, joint pain, weight loss, loss of appetite.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: stomach pain, yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, fever, black or bloody stool, red or pink urine, difficulty breathing, change in amount of uirne. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but stop the allopurinol IV and seek immediate medical atetntion if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, troulbe breathing. If you notice any other effects not listed above, contcat your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, liver problems, gout, any allergies.
This drug may make you drowsy.
Use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or usnig machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly becuase they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug.
This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Disucss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication pasess into breast milk.
While there have been no reprots of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprsecription medication you may use, especially: azathioprine, mercaptopurine, "blood thinners" (e.G., dicumarol, warfarin), penicillin antibiotics (e.G., ampicillin, amoxicillin), "water pills" (e.G., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), chlorpropamide, cyclosporine, probenecid, sulfinpyrazone, anti-cancer drugs. Tell your doctor if you take any drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti- anxiety drugs (e.G., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.G., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.G., phenothiazines or tricyclics), anti-seizure drugs (e.G., carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, certain antihistamines (e.G., diphenhydramine).
Cehck the label on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of these products.
Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmcaist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tetss may be performed to monitor your progress. If you take the oral form of allopurinol, inform your doctor.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you rememebr.
If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dsoing schedule.
Do not double the dose to cacth up.
STORAGE: Store unmixed/powder vials at room tepmerature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C).
After mixing and further dilution with IV fluids, this product is stable for 10 hours at room temperature. Do not refrigerate the mixed vial or diluetd solution. Discard any unused portion of the vial.
